Technology in Elementary Education

There has undoubtedly been an increased use and prominence in the presence of technology in elementary schools and in primary education. Here are some of the top and the most significant reasons why technology should become a permanent and prominent fixture in the classroom from an early age:

  • Technology is prominent in the real world, and therefore, applying it, teaching kids how to use it properly, and practical application and use of it will help them be prepared for their chosen careers and for the rest of their life.
  • Technology is a sustainable solution and reduces the amount of printed paper and other resources. Also, using things like recycled and refurbished imac and other devices are sustainable solutions as well.
  • Technology empowers the student; leveraging different technology applications can enable the student and put their learning in their own hands. A lot of technological use in the classroom, such as applications which teach maths, for example, promotes the concept of self-starting and learning.
  • Leveraging the broad reach of technology is a great way to allow students to connect with others and professionals. Collaboration online can be helpful if done in a safe space with supervision, guidance and proper boundaries.
  • It caters to all learning styles and assists those who may not learn in traditional ways or who may have different needs.
  • It teaches and allows responsible teaching use, in terms of proper device use, online behaviour and the parameters of use. If the application of technology is introduced, and it is taught in a way which encourages safe responsible use, it can help minimize the risk of things such as cyberbullying.
  • Engagement and relatability increase with the use of technology. This is especially true for those in later grades and those who use devices and technology in other facets of life.
  • Creating opportunity and curiosity; by using technology, a new skill set is developed and innovations such as virtual reality and other technology forms can be used to teach different subjects, but can also spark curiosity in various fields, and lead students to explore a wide range of career paths, hobbies and interests.
  • Real-time information; technology is a way to consume and make information available in real time, a lot quicker than traditional methods. This includes information on grades and evaluation, report cards and communication with parents, etc.
  • Technology empowers the teacher; technology gives the teacher a platform and allows them to leverage different forms of technology, to be more than just an educator.
  • Access to teaching resources; technology gives teachers access to so many resources and enriching materials which can enhance and improve the quality of the content, as well as the overall curriculum.
